“At the heart of the Christian message is God Himself waiting for His redeemed children to push in to conscious awareness of His presence. That type of Christianity which happens now to be the vogue knows this Presence only in theory. It fails to stress the Christian’s privilege of present realization. According to its teachings we are in the presence of God positionally, and nothing is said about the need to experience that Presence actually.”
I’m still working through the book “The Pursuit of God” by A.W. Tozer. I came across this passage and it stuck out to me because this is something that I’ve been praying and thinking a lot about. I don’t just want to be a Christian that knows a lot of things about God because I’ve read about Him or heard from other people, but I want to be one that knows things about the Lord because I’ve encountered Him.
There is a difference between preaching the word and giving your testimony. Preaching the word is when you share God’s truth revealed in the Bible. Testimony is when you are telling others about things God has specifically done that you’ve experienced.
It says in Revelation that we will overcome the evil one by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. Head knowledge only goes so far. A reality made known in your heart will last forever. And when situations come up, it is easier to recall something you’ve experienced then what you’ve heard. Plus, it’s easier to believe.
My heart is to be one that knows characteristics of the Lord because I’ve encountered those aspects of Him. My challenge for you is not to be satisfied with just second-hand knowledge but to desire that encounter with the living God.
